Grand China Travel

The earliest traces of human habitation in Guilin date back to the Qin Dynasty (B.C.221- B.C.214). Since then, Guilin had become the political, economic and cultural centre of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. During the Tang and Song Dynasties, local civilization lived prosperously leaving many historic relics still intact today. Among the innumerable historic relics, there are some distinguished representatives including Jingjiang Prince Villa epigraph (of the Ming Dynasty), which is the largest of all the epigraphs in Guilin. Besides, Guilin's Ling Canal, located in Xin'an County, ranks as one of the three greatest Water Conservancies in Ancient China. It was built in the Qin Dynasty and is still fully functional today. Owning such an abundance of historic relics and epigraphs, Guilin became part of China’s first batch of National Historic and Cultural Cities in 1982.

Introducing General Joseph W. Stilwell Museum, General Joseph W. Stilwell Museum Travel Guide
Article from Chongqing Municipal Commission of Tourism

The General Joseph W. Stilwell Museum is situated in the Yuzhong Region of Chongqing, and occupies an area of 7.2 mu (about 1.2 acres). The General Joseph W. Stilwell Museum was founded in memory of Joseph W. Stilwell, an American general who contributed a great deal to the Chinese people. Since the museum opened to the public in 1991, tens of thousands of visitors from home and overseas have been there. William Pace, a former American Secretary of Defense, made a special trip to the museum in 1994 and was greatly touched by how well it had been preserved. Although the General Joseph W. Stilwell Museum has been restored and enlarged several times, the style of it has not been changed.

In 1942, during the Second World War, General Joseph W. Stilwell acted under orders to come to Chongqing. He worked as Chief of Staff in the China Theater of Operations and as the Commander-in-Chief of the American Army in the China Burma India Theater (CBI). The residence became the headquarters of the China Burma India Theater during that period. General Stilwell participated in a series of political and military affairs in the CBI Theater of World WarⅡ, and cemented a profound friendship with the Chinese people fighting side-by-side in the Anti-Fascist War in China. In July 1944, campaigns in Northern Burma succeeded and a road between India and China was built under his direct supervision, which made ammunitions and weapons accessible to China and brought an end to the blockade of the fascist state. The road was later named Joseph W. Stilwell Road. President Roosevelt recalled General Stilwell to Washington in 1944.

The main building of the General Joseph W. Stilwell Museum is the former residence of General Joseph W. Stilwell. It is a three-storied house, including an office,an adjutant room, two meeting rooms, bedrooms and a basement. Simple furniture is shown as it was during the time that he lived there, and more than one hundred articles such as household goods, manuscripts and the uniform which was used by the general are displayed. In the residence's courtyard, a monument stands in the center on which is engraved a passage of epigraph in both English and Chinese. The epigraph was written by Franklin Delano Roosevelt on May 17, 1944. There is a bust of General Joseph W. Stilwell to one side of the monument, which gives visitors a vivid portrait of this great general.

Introducing Chongqing Ciqikou, Chongqing Ciqikou guide, Chongqing Ciqikou Travel Guide
Article from Chongqing Municipal Commission of Tourism

Situated on the bank of the Jia Ling River, not far from its confluence with the mighty Yangtze is the Chongqing Ciqikou, formerly known as Long Yin. Covering an area of some 1.2 square kilometres (291.6 acres), Chongqing Ciqikou is 14 kilometres to the west of Chongqing Municipality.

Chongqing itself has undergone many changes over the centuries, changes that have not been reflected in Chongqing Ciqikou with the consequence that the village conveys an impression of what Chongqing would have been like in the distant past. This fact has been recognized by the State Council and in 1998 Chongqing Ciqikou became a protected cultural site.

The history of Chongqing Ciqikou can be traced back for more than 1700 years. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368-1911), it was famous for its production of porcelain. To date, over twenty old kiln sites have been discovered there. It is because of the importance of the porcelain industry that the name has been changed from Long Yin to Ciqikou which being translated means Porcelain Village. However, the village was also an important supply post for shipping on the river, a fact that explains why there are so many shops lining the twelve lanes paved with their large flag stones that form the main routes. Here you will find many outlets for craftwork, groceries and the like as well as a horologist, photography supplies, drugstore and a tempting supply of roasted nuts and seeds. As one would expect there are also many teashops and restaurants to cater for the many visitors who come to see something of a way of life that has existed here for so many centuries.

The majority of the houses date from the Ming and Qing Dynasties, periods during which many masterpieces of Chinese architecture were created. Much of the two and three storey construction is of bamboo and timber. Blue bricks and pillars set off the snow-white walls that contrast in turn with vermilion doors and lattice windows. Black tablets and lanterns adorn the gates to complete the authentic and traditional appearance of the properties. The quietly flowing waters of the Jia Ling River pass by the front of the village and have been its lifeblood for as long as anyone can remember. For it was the river that brought goods and people here as well as carrying local products off to customers at home and abroad.
