Money Exchange

You can exchange traveler's checks or cash at most banks, and most 5-star and 4-star hotels always have a money exchange counter. You can also get a cash advance on your credit card on ATM machine. The exchange rate all over China are the same fixed by Bank of China. To change money, you have to have your passport at hand. If you want to change money in a hotel, you usually have to be a guest there. Sometimes if you are not a guest in a hotel but need to change money there, you can just say a random room number, but this doesn't always work. Remember to keep the exchange slip well because you need this slip to change the Chinese Yuan back to your currency if you do have this need at the end of the tour. At present, the RMB is not exchangeable on the International market, so it is only usable within the country. So when you are changing money, don't change too much, because it is difficult to change back into other currencies. To change RMB back into your home currency, you must retain the exchange slips that are given to you at the bank or money exchange counter.

Bars in Harbin

·Blue's Club

Or people watching. It’s best to visit on a Friday or Saturday night, but even on a quiet night there’s some form of entertainment; be it a staged show (Russian karaoke or a bizarre cross between Russian folk dancing and military marching) or just watching someone hopped up on drugs (or perhaps firewater) making a fool of themselves.

Address: 100 Diduan Jie Ph.   Tel:  (0451) 8463 5517

·Indiana Club

It features a massive dance floor (complete with large video screen), free pool table, friendly staff, and a great mix of people – its location right by the university brings in a lot of students. The nightly floor shows are a lot of fun, ranging from straight karaoke, to stripteases, to transvestite shows, to Russian folk dancing. Pacer’s is sort of split into two parts: you can either join the revelry in the club area, or chill out in the larger bar area.

Address: 102 Xi Dazhi Jie  Tel:  (0451) 8640 2111

·The Box

The Box has the annoying policy of making you spend a certain amount to earn the privilege of sitting at a table. Weeknights are dead – if you go, definitely only do so on a weekend.

Address: 82 Xi Dazhi Jie Ph.   Tel: (0451) 8647 3860

·Ice Bar

It's a fun experience, with the whole structure (except the floor) made of ice, including ice chairs, tables, ashtrays and glasses. Vodka shots are ¥30, while beer is exorbitantly priced at ¥30 for a tiny glass of supposedly German beer poured from a can. Worth stopping in for one or two drinks.

Address: Central Street (Zhongyang Dajie)

·Mozart Bar

Located down by the small canal area, Indu Lu is the bar street of Harbin (also containing a knock off Hard Rock café and various other establishments), the Mozart Bar is probably the best hole in the wall in the city. Previously named “Gorkys” and with much of the previous bars memorabilia intact, it is still far more Russian than Viennese. Vodka here is served at room temperature, by the bottle (if you want it chilled just stick it in the snow outside for ten minutes) and with an old Russian library selection to rummage through this can be quite an entertaining winter hangout, with various Russian traders dropping in to say hello. The amazing painting in the entrance is worth the price of a bottle of vodka alone.

Drinks are expensive, but it' s en energetic place and is usually quite packed: particularly on Wednesday night, the designated ''ladies' night''.

Harbin is one of the largest commercial cities in Northeast China, local products can be divided into two main categories:Russia food and accessories, Northeast specialty. You can get Russian bread, Russian chocolate, candy, as well as Russian necklace which are relatively cheap in Harbin. In addition, you may also buy tea, paintings and decorations fromRussia and Eastern European countries. Ginseng, pilose antler and mink skin are named the Three Treasures of Northeast China. You can easily find  those things in shops of Harbin. The vacuum-packed Harbin sausage, smoked salmon are also well worth buying. In addition, the Northeast black fungus, mushrooms, dried fruits are available at local food market, supermarkets and large shopping malls.

Central Avenue Pedestrian Street

Harbin, a famous city in the North of China, was identified as a national-level historical and cultural city in 1994. Central Avenue Pedestrian Street is a notable representative and prominent sign of Harbin. Since June 1st, 1997, being constructed as the first commercial and pedestrian street in China, the Central Avenue Pedestrian Street has become the first-class street in China and renowned overseas at the moment, and it has become a unique cultural charm pedestrian Street, including commercial, tourism, leisure and entertainment. All of that adds a hint of a new charm to Harbin, known as the Oriental Small Paris and the Oriental Moscow.

Central Avenue Pedestrian Street is 1, 450 meters long and 21.34 meters wide (the width of quadrel road is 10.8 meters). All the blocks of Central Avenue Pedestrian Street cover 94.05 hectares (about one square kilometer), east from Friendship Road  to the construction red line of the west side of Jing Wei Street, west from Friendship Road of Tong jiang Street to the construction red line of the east side of Jing Wei Street, south from ShangZhi Street to the construction red line of the north side of Tong Jiang Street, north from ShangZhi Street to the construction red line of the south side of Tong Jiang Street and the plaza of the Flood Control Monument Square.

Local Specialties of Harbin

Harbin is the largest commercial city in Northeast China. The specialties can be divided into two kinds: the Russian style specialties and local specialties. The Russian style specialties include food and ornaments, such as Dalieba bread, Russian chocolate and violet gold necklace. Those souvenirs are cheap and easy to carry. As to the local specialties, the three treasures in Northeast China may be the first things that rush into your mind. The three treasures in Northeast China refer to ginseng, pilose antler and marten. Visitors should pay special attention in case of being cheated. Besides, Harbin sausage and Smoked Salmon are also nice souvenirs.

Department Stores & Super Markets

Harbin has many shopping stores, such as Churin Company, Harbin Department Store, Jiangnanchun Shopping Mall, Hate Plaza, Manhattan Shopping Mall, New World Department Store and Songlei International Shopping Mall etc. Besides, the city also has a lot of large scale whole sale markets, including Jianshenjie Shoe City, HaxiDressing City and Dafa Wholesale Market. What’s more, there are lots of shopping streets in Harbin, such as Central Avenue Pedestrian Street, Jinjie Underground Commercial Street and Renhe Underground Street.

The colonial influence in Harbin is evident in much of the city's cuisine and eating here is a very different experience from dining elsewhere in China or indeed in the province.

For starters, the exterior of the restaurants is pretty unique. Lanterns hang outside each restaurant, each denoting different characteristics about the food and facilities available. Red lanterns denote a typical Chinese place and blue lanterns indicate that the restaurant serves Muslim food (no pork). What's more, the greater the number of lanterns hanging outside, the higher the standard of cooking and accordingly, the larger the size of your bill!

The actual dishes available in many places is also unusual. Exotic animals such as deer, bear and tiger were once an integral part of the diet here. Fortunately Beijing have made their disapproval of this kind of thing clear in recent years, and Bear Paw and Siberian Tiger Testicles are no longer as popular as they once were.

In accordance with the historical influence, Russian styles are used abundantly in the preparation of most dishes. Stroganoff and caviar are also available in a few places, including the Huamei Restaurant.

For more typical Harbin food, check out the Futailou Restaurant, serving good fish soups and some of the city's more exotic dishes. The Beilaishun Restaurant is an authority on Muslim dishes (note the plethora of blue lanterns suspended from outside). The Laodu Yichu Dumpling Restaurant, is one of the few places in town serving authentic dongbei dumplings.

Local Specialties:

Big Bread
Big Bread (da mianbao) is another specialty that bears obvious Russian influence. These huge breads are round in shape and can weigh as much as 6 pounds. Aside from size and weight, what makes this particular bread popular with locals and foreigners is the European flavor. When you come to Harbin to appreciate the Russian architecture, don't forget to sample this crispy-on the-outside yet soft within bread!

Dumpling
When one mentions Chinese dumpling (jiaozi), most people are familiar with the crescent shaped dumpling that can be found across the country. Only in Harbin can you expect to sample some of the most authentic and original types of dumpling, made using quality flour and fresh cabbage and pork meat. These dumplings are usually served around Chinese New Year and during the Ice Festival as special treats.
