Yuantong Temple is the most famous Buddhist temple in Kunming, Yunnan province, China. Yuantong Temple is located in a protected natural depression and in recent years Yuantong Temple has been expanded with funding from Thailand.
In the 1950s, Yuantong Temple hosted a grand ceremony to greet and send on the sacred teeth of the Buddha and so became important in Southeast Asia.

Yuantong Temple was first built in the late 8th and early 9th century, the time of the Nanzhao Kingdom in the Tang dynasty. After two major restorations and expansion in the Chenghua period (1465-1487) of the Ming dynasty and in 1686 during the reign of the Kangxi Emperor in the Qing dynasty, the temple took on its present design, with covered corridors, bridges and grand halls.

This old temple is noted for its unusual structure which is high at the front and low at the back, From the front archway named "Yuantong Shengjing" (Wonderland), one can behold the entire garden. To the north is the splendid Yuantong main hall. At both sides of the hall are covered corridors running beside clear pools. This structure of a Buddhist hall surrounded by water is unique in China. The main hall maintains the style of the Yuan dynasty architecture. Circling the two central pillars inside the hall are two giant dragons carved during the Ming dynasty. The blue and yellow dragons face each other, as if they are ready to fight.

The stone staircases on both sides of the main hall are carved out of the cliff and are known as the "Caizhilu." From here one can climb to the top of the mountain. Beside the path are the most ancient inscriptions in Kunming. Weathering in the wind and rain for centuries, the characters are still clear today, and they are one of the most important historical relics in the city.

Introducing Golden Temple, Golden Temple Guide,Golden Temple Travel Guide, Golden Temple Information
Article from CITS

The Golden Temple is a famous Taoism temple in Yunnan Province. Located on the charming Mingfeng Hill (means Singing Phoenix Hill in English), about 15 kilometers from the east Kunming urban area, the Golden Temple is also known as Taihe Palace (Hall of Supreme Harmony) or Tongwa Temple (Bronze Tile Temple). It is the largest copper architecture in China.

Golden Temple was firstly built in 1602 during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), imitating the design of the Taihe Palace in Wudang Mountain of Hubei Province. The temple hall is 6.7 meter in height, and weighs 250 tons. All of the beam columns, doors, windows, roof tiles, statues, wall decorations, the banner near the gate and couplets, are made of bronze. The burnished bronze gleams like gold under the shining sun, hence the temple got its name.

Like most of the Taoist temples, visitors must climb hundreds of winding stone steps on the mountainside and get through three “Heavenly Gates,” which are highly decorated with well-painted archivolts and carded beams and rafters before approaching the temple. The stone steps are surrounded by beautiful scenery, and while climbing the stone steps, you could feel a sense of inner peace as they integrate themselves into the beauty of Mingfeng Hill.

At the end of the stone path there situated a miniature city wall built along with Lingxing Gate (the gate leading to the temple) and battlements. Inside Taihe Palace, numerous historical objects are on display. Among these objects is a double-edged sword with the Big Dipper weighs 20 kilograms engraved on it. It is said that this is the magic sword of Zhen Wu, a Taoist deity who guards Mingfeng Hill. Another broadsword with a wooden handle is said to be the saber of Wu Sangui (a seignior of Qing Dynasty), and weighs 12 kilograms (about 24.5 pounds). Behind the temple, a camellia tree signaling the approach of spring every February with its hundreds of exquisite blossoms is planted. Visitors could also find a lager striemia indica tree, these trees, over 600 years old, add more energy to the quiet temple.

The Dianchi Lake Scenic Area is located in the southwest part of Kunming City. Dianchi Lake is, beyond question, the center of the scenic area. There are numerous attractions along the lake captivating tourists. Among these are the Yunnan Ethnic Villages, Daguan Park, Baiyukou Park, Haigeng Bank, Kwan-yin Hill, Xishan Forest Park, temples and pagodas. Towns, big or small near the lake provide visitors with an opportunity to experience customs of the local people.

Dianchi Lake is about 300 square kilometers (74,132 acres). It is the largest freshwater lake in Yunnan Province and the sixth largest one in China. With picturesque scenery and its location on the Yungui Plateau, the lake has a reputation as ’A Pearl on the Plateau’. Unfortunately, the lake has been badly polluted. Although efforts have been made to save the lake, they have been largely unsuccessful.

The lake is crescent-shaped, about 39 kilometers (24 miles) in length and 13 kilometers (8 miles) in width at its widest. Its natural banks are formed by mountains on all four sides. More than twenty rivers nurture the lake which has a shoreline of 163.2 kilometers (101 miles). Four surrounding hills contribute to the picturesque landscape, making visitors intoxicated and linger around. You may appreciate the beauty of the lake and hills from a boat, and explore this cradle of Yunnan culture.
