We will visit the Wide & Narrow Alley of Chengdu in the afternoon. The wide and narrow alleys are two ancient streets being restored to the original Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) architectural styles. We will experience the leisurely and comfortable life in Chengdu with boutique hotels, characteristic local snacks, traditional teahouse, distinctive inns and relaxing spas.

Later we will visit the Summer Palace of Dalai Lama: the Norbulingka Park. After lunch we will visit the highest palace in the world, the Potala Palace. Built on the red hill in the center of Lhasa, the Potala Palace boasts more than 1000 rooms including the Red Palace where Dalai Lama once lived.

    Meals Included: Breakfast & lunch
We will visit the 1300-year-old Jokhang Monastery in the morning where we will follow local Tibetans for a Kora of Jokhang Monastery, walk around theBarkor Bazaar. Jokhang Monastery, constructed by King Songtsen Gampo in the year AD647 is the most famous Buddhist temple in Lhasa. This monastery has remained the centre of Buddhist pilgrimage for centuries, and over a period of last several centuries, the monastery complex continue to be expanded and now covers an area of around 25,000 sq. meters. We will visit Sera Monastery in the afternoon. Founded in 1419, at its height, Sera monastery was residence to more than 5,000 monks and five monastic colleges, although much less active now, with only several hundred monks currently in residence. One of the most interesting times to visit the monastery is in the afternoon when monks, after finishing their morning scripture classes, can be seen debating in the courtyard. They emphasize their debate points with heavy foot stomping and loud claps of the hands. This highly animated debating method is part of the time-honored monastic educational system.

  • Tibet Impression Tour 6 Days Optional Tours
Day 1: Changing Faces Opera with Backstage Visit, USD60 per person
On this optional tour, we'll experience the Changing Faces opera. Face changing (bian lian) is an ancient Chinese dramatic art that is part of the more general Sichuan opera. Performers wear brightly colored costumes and move to quick, dramatic music. They also wear vividly colored masks, typically depicting well known characters from the opera, which they change from one face to another almost instantaneously with the swipe of a fan, a movement of the head, or wave of the hand. Before the performance, we'll meet the performers backstage and try another Chinese art: hand shadow play done with a sophistication you have probably never witnessed.
