    Tour Introduction
Vast, fertile, charming, and with a topography that slants downward from northeast to southwest, the 1.183 million-square-km northern Chinese border region of Inner Mongolia is home to a total population of 23 million (including 3.7 million Mongols and 800,000 minority peoples). The vast meadowlands are made exactly for the fun of horseback riding. Imbibing a cup of wine or nursing a bowl of fresh milk in a Mongolian yurt to the tuneos-folk songs and the beats of dances is most exhilarating experience.

Mongolia has been a horse based culture for thousands of years. The speed, power and dexterity of the little Mongolian horses changed the course of the history and the face of the world in the 12th century when Ghengis Khan established the largest land empire the world had ever known with the horse as his key weapon. Today, horse remains central to life on the steppe and good horsemanship paramount to surviving the harsh climate, fierce wind and long winters. Even for the settled modern day nomads, life would be impossible without horse. Born in the saddles Mongolians are some of the most skillful, talented and resilient horsemen in the world and have an immense respects for horses.

Grand halls and courts gradually give way to more intimate domestic quarters, giving an insight into the pampered isolation of the emperors. Today is the highlight of our China tour, the climbing of the Great Wall of China. In 220 B.C., under Qin Shihuang, the first emperor of China, sections of earlier fortifications were joined together to form a united defense system against invasions from the north. Construction of the great wall continued up to the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), when the Great Wall became the world's largest military structure. Its historic and strategic importance is matched only by its architectural significance. After lunch we will visit the Ming Tombs. Constructed for the 13 emperors of the Ming Dynasty, the Ming tombs follow the precepts of traditional Chinese geomancy and fengshui theory. They feature rich decoration of stone statues and carvings and tiles with dragon motifs, illustrating the development of the funerary architecture of the Ming Dynasty.
